Jogi Samaja

Nath Panth sadhus given warm welcome

MANGALORE, FEB. 9. Over 300 sadhus from Nath Panth, who had been camping at Panambur for two days, entered the city on Monday. They will participate in the coronation of Raja Sandhya Nathji as head of the Jogi Math at Kadri on February 18. The head of the math is replaced every 12 years. The sadhus, including Raja Sandhya Nathji, came from Nasik on foot. The Mayor, K. Diwakar, gave them a warm welcome at Kottara Chowki. He was joined by corporators, Harinath Jogi, vice-president of the Paryaya Raja Pattabhisheka Mahotsava Samiti, and followers of the Nath Panth.

The sadhus started their journey from Nashik on August 5, when Nagara Panchami was celebrated, after participating in the Thrayambhakeshwara Kumbh Mela. After the reception, the sadhus were taken in procession to Kudroli Temple where they performed pujas. Later, they offered prayers at Venkataramana Temple on Car Street and Kadri Manjunatheswara Temple. They will camp at the math, which is also known as Kadali Yogishwar Math, till the completion of the coronation ceremony, which begins on February 14.

The Nath Panth is a cult founded by Macherndranath and Gorakhnath. There are 12 sects in the panth, and the seers from only four of them could head the Jogi Math. Raja Mohan Nathji would complete his term on Shivarahtri.

The sadhus would also select the next Raj Guru of the Yogishwar Math based at Vitla in Bantwal taluk. The coronation of the Raj Guru would also be held on the occasion. There are about 8,000 Jogi Maths in the country. Eighty of them are in the State, where the cult has one lakh followers.
